Matcha and skincare

With Autumn officially in full swing, here at Taiki Tea we are getting prepared for the cold weather and harsh wind. However, this year we thought differently, if matcha is a super powerhouse for inside the body, why can’t it be exactly that for the outside? I mean who has the time to hunt for the latest ‘miracle’ moisturiser again. Like Einstein once famously said ‘Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’ Not this year!

We have seen some matcha beauty product cropping up, but we want to be educated, what is it in matcha that makes it so amazing for the skin? So Zen Warriors, we did our research here is the lowdown.

Chlorophyll and caffeine

Matcha has chlorophyll in abundance and the same amount of naturally occurring caffeine per serving as a shot of espresso.

Both chlorophyll and caffeine are renowned for their high levels of antioxidants which go round the body mopping up free radicals, so helps the bodyguard against the development of some diseases and damage (including aging).

They both also possess fantastic anti-inflammatory properties, so work really well on puffy skin, tightening and reducing fine lines.

Chlorophyll also has fabulous purification and antimicrobial properties, perfect for flushing out toxins and cleansing the skin.

Natural caffeine is also great for the treatment of rosacea, as when applied topically it constricts blood vessels and reduces redness and skin irritation.

We should also give a special shout-out to the tannins in matcha which help treat oily skin, and catechins which are an antioxidant superhero.

We didn't just stop there, following from this mammoth research task, we got straight to work in the Taiki kitchen and mustered up some homemade matcha skincare products.

Taiki Tea matcha, honey and banana face mask

To get ready for the change in season we are starting our skincare feature with this deep clean face mask.

Along with the benefits of matcha, honey has fantastic antibacterial properties and bananas are great for skin nourishment. This mask will easily absorb into the skin, moisturising and hydrating, making it feels soft and silky.

Before any face mask, ensure you cleanse the skin well. This gets rid of all that pesky dead skin and prepares your face.
